Spring Studios in NYC

I love raw spaces because it allows us event designers to get creative. But when we come across the "the perfect raw space" to work with, it just makes the planning experience more fun! Creativity runs amok!  I admit, I enjoy attending showcase events - especially for raw space venues. I like to see how the venue's own event planner wants us to see the space.

I was thinking about Spring Studios the other day, because I told a friend about the space. I had been to the venue for two different events that I didn't know happened in the same room. As it turns out, I took video of the space at both events. Of course, now I see the similarities but I thought I'd show the comparison of the two setups.

This video is from when I attended the NYC & Company showcase at Spring Studios. It was set up as a reception with hi-boy tabletops as informal "booths" for every vendor,  but I could also see this as one trendy party. The floor-to-ceiling windows are impressive when you first enter the room.

On another occasion, a friend invited me to a Zac Posen show during New York Fashion Week. From what I've seen online and in magazines, this is a pretty typical set up for fashion shows: the runway path is laid out, and theater-style seatig is on either side of the runway. I recorded this room prior to the fashion show as people were finding their seats. You'll notice that the room looks smaller. They've put up false walls on either side of the entire space to create some extra rooms (maybe dressing rooms) and lowered the ceiling due to all the rigging of lights to shine on the runway throughout the room. At least that's what I perceive.

With an open mind, some creativity, and perhaps some money, anything can be done with a blank canvas.
