A Garden Behind the Gates

On a recent trip to Taormina, Italy, I booked a spa appointment at the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, in the center of town. Right next to the Teatro Antico di Taormina, I found the green gates that seemed to guard a small courtyard property. I thought it was odd that there would be gates like this in the middle of town, but soon I realized the gates protected something very special: Timeo’s sloping, graceful gardens. The landscape demonstrated thoughtfulness in showcasing patios and staircases complimented by various shrubberies and trees, and all against a backdrop view of the sea. As I walked through the garden along a hairpin path to get to the spa house, I was compelled to take photos of it all.

I discovered that this venue is perfect for weddings and other special occasions, but unfortunately I was unable to find more information without registering for access (which I don’t like to do if I know the likelihood of planning an event in Taormina in the future is nil). I felt privileged to see the grounds of the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo property, especially since it’s not open to everyone. Its beauty will be forever remembered when I think fondly of Taormina.
