Let Them Eat Cake

Let Them Eat Cake

I really enjoy when hotels throw an event for us event planners. Who doesn't like a good networking reception to catch up with peers while learning about the latest offers, renovations and updates? But let's face it: sometimes these receptions and in-office meetings get stale and be easily forgotten. That's why I appreciate it more when I'm invited to event that still involves networking, yet is incredibly memorable.

Though I won't disclose the name of the venue, I want to share this experience because I could also see this as a wonderful, corporate team-building activity or ice-breaker. In promoting a corporate value of creativity and fun, this event gathered us planners together for a cake-decorating class.

Materials and tools were placed on each of the rounds, which also served as a conversation piece while we ate some light bites. "Where do you work? Have you ever decorated a cake before?" After some noshing and brief introductions, we were given aprons to don as we ran through a folder of designs to put on each of our cakes. Representatives came around to chat with us while also distributing "cake colors" and other little accessories. Most of the evening was spent chatting away as we worked feverishly to get our designs done perfectly (or tried to hide the imperfections!).

I opted for the the Superman emblem, not only because I'm a fan but also because it looked easier than some of the other designs (ahem, don't be fooled by Hello Kitty). By the end of the evening, I had a great time making contacts with fellow planners and sales reps. And I had the best souvenir from this event!

In case you're curious, I brought the cake to work the next day to share with my colleagues. I asked one of my colleagues if she had tried the cake. "Yes, I did. And it looked very nice!"
